These photos use the leading lines technique, something I will make use of during this unit. My favorite aspect of these photos is the colours, in one a complete black and white élan has been used while in the other one contains one primary colour, which makes the leading lines in the road the primary focus of the image and quite elegantly brings attention to the misty forest in the background. The last thing I appreciate about these images is the sense of isolation they bring, when viewing these photos you are under the impression the photographer is completely alone, creating a remote and solitary atmosphere with a single subject focus. This is antithetical to photography units I’ve studied in the past, such as ‘people and possessions’ where it was my pre-eminent goal to capture an array of interesting activity. This type photography of can still be captured as part of this unit, as it is a busy atmosphere, but for me to also experiment with lonely this style of photography and create a lonely atmosphere would be a juxtaposition highlighting my creative range as a photographer. |
I appreciate this photographer as although formally untrained, Mikko uses a range of stylistic techniques in his photographer that are very appealing to the eye of an experienced photographer.
These photos, for instance, create a strong mood of remote seclusion primarily due to the choices the photographer has made, such as the black & white image. As part of this unit, I will experiment with black & white techniques a lot more although I have a strong understanding of the black and white effect and the wide palette of emotions it can present, I have never used it strongly, as there are only a small amount of my photos it would improve. Though if my pre-eminent goal is to achieve a strong atmosphere black & white will likely be useful at many occasions throughout this unit. I am also fond of the reflections in these photos, which is something I will likely touch on, reflections can represent lots of moods, in psychoanalysis it is speculated the first moment when the ego is formed as a child is when you see your own reflection for the first time, so it is undeniable that reflections play an important part of how we perceive the world, this is why I place a strong emphasis on reflections and mirror images, it is rare to find a photo shoot of mine where there is not at least one reflection. Many famous photographers work with reflections as it is an interesting fashion of photography. |
This is one of my favourite Travis Burke photos, he captures lots of images in this style with a person looking out over a beautiful landscape. I love this technique as it creates a feeling of freedom while being a beautiful image at the same time. Burke says one of his goals as a photographer is to inspire others to live a life he does, there is a lot of freedom in not being tied to one place and having the ability to explore as you please, although he admits it's not always easy. he makes an income from various sponsors.

Burke never fails to create photos with a strong sense of atmosphere, like this photo that shows someone running alone down a path on a dark, cloudy day. The leading lines in this photo creates a strong sense of loneliness, and the empty environment shows this person has been running for a long time, perhaps symbolic of the long journey through life |
Lucinda Chua is a talented photography graduate who captures atmospheric portraits of people, using light and backgrounds creatively to create a deep feeling and mood. Often like these examples, two portraits that appear to share the same moment and photo, are two separate photos although this is not what the photo suggests. The gestures in the photo wold imply that these strangers are closely related.
In the work of Lucinda Chua, she always pays careful attention and consideration to lighting and composition to create thought-provoking imagery by placing the subjects exactly where she wants them to be, and making interesting lighting effects. This is why although these Images on the left are simply two separate portraits, the composition and the way they are framed makes them seem very interesting. In this unit I will work with lighting creatively throughout this unit, using things such as the flash on my camera, street lights, and phone lighting to create interesting effects. |
